What is DataTrium Hosting ?
DataTrium Hosting is a monthly service to share your FileMaker Pro database over the internet. Authorized users can access your database 24/7, using FileMaker Pro software or a standard web browser. Hosting is done on a powerful server running “FileMaker Server Advanced” software. Top
How will I access my database once it's on the DataTrium server ?
After your database is installed, simple instructions will be e-mailed to you. Discover how easily you can access your database with FileMaker Pro 7.0, 8.0, 8.5, 9.0 or a web browser. Top
Who will have access to my database ?
As the administrator, you have priority access to your database. Access by all others is dictated by the “Accounts & Privileges” setting within your database. Setting up “Accounts & Privileges” will let you share your database through FileMaker Pro or any supported web browser. Allow “guests” for public access or create private accounts with user names and passwords for only those you want. Share all of your data or only part of it. Set read-write or read-only privileges. Make changes to your “Accounts & Privileges” at any time, straight on the DataTrium server. The 30 to 60 day free trial is a good way to experiment with “Accounts & Privileges”. Top
Will DataTrium staff have access to my database ?
No. Password protect your database before sending it for hosting and DataTrium staff will never have access to your database or its settings, unless you decide otherwise. Some customers will grant us access to their database for short periods so we can help with development. We are here to help. Top
How will I send my database to DataTrium?
Database files smaller then 5 gigabytes can usually be sent via e-mail. Bigger files must be compressed (.zip or .sit) or can be uploaded via FTP or AFP for Mac users.

I only need to share my database inside the office.
Should I still consider DataTrium Hosting?
Yes. Here are a few reasons why. If you decide to host your database yourself inside the office, FileMaker Pro will only let you share your database with 5 other users of FileMaker Pro. Instant Web Publishing is also limited to 5 connections. The computer used to host the database might be used for other activities thereby creating performance issues. Backups will be done manually. Getting your own FileMaker Pro sever can be an expensive proposition and you will need some experience to run it. Even for small operations, DataTrium Hosting is cost effective and generates peace of mind. Top
Can I make changes to my database structure once it's on the DataTrium server ?
Yes. Users with full access privileges can make changes to the structure (tables, fields, layouts, scripts, etc.) directly on the DataTrium server for immediate benefits. This is a major improvement over previous versions of FileMaker Pro. Top
Do I need to complete my database construction before hosting it on DataTrium ?
No. You don't need to complete the construction of your database before you start hosting it. As a matter of fact, you might benefit from hosting your database during its construction. Associates can validate your design to speed construction and data entry can start earlier. In addition, your work in progress is backed up every night. Top
Could I start developing from a blank database sitting on the server?
Yes. If you don't have a ready made database to upload to the server, we can set you up with a blank database to work with. It's a great way to learn about hosting with FileMaker Server Advanced. You will be offered this option at the time of registration. Top
Should my database be built as a single file ?
Yes. Accounts & Privileges are much easier to manage in a single file database. A multiple file database will cost more to host. Top
How big can my database be ?
Your database can be any size you want. Your DataTrium subscription includes 2 Gb of disk space. This is more than enough for most of our customers. Chances are your database will never reach that size unless it's in the 2 to 3 million records range or if it carries a lot of pictures or media files. If needed, extra space is available at a reasonable price. Top
What kind of performance can I expect from my online database ?
If you have high speed internet access, performance should be equal to or better than local sharing. Performance on dial-up access is also quite acceptable. Your free trial will help you makeup your own opinion. Top
What is FileMaker Pro Instant Web Publishing (IWP) ?
“Instant Web Publishing” lets you access your FileMaker Pro database with popular web browsers, without programing complicated web pages. Your database will be displayed in a web browser the same way you see it using FileMaker Pro. If you are comfortable designing layouts and buttons to navigates through them, you are ready for IWP. Although IWP has its limitations, it will work great for record consultation and data entry. Top
What is FileMaker Pro Custom Web Publishing (CWP)?
Custom Web Publishing takes over at IWP's limits. It delivers more flexibility and performance. However, you will need some experience in building web pages, along with some knowledge of XML and XSLT tags. Your DataTrium subscription includes all the directory access to build and host a Custom Web Publishing solution. Top
I already have a web site. Can I integrate my hosted database with my web site?
Yes. This is called a “database bolt-on”. Your free trial will include 2 web addresses to access your database; one for Instant Web Publishing (IWP) and one for Custom Web Publishing (CWP). Activate IWP and CWP at any time and use them as links inside your web site. Top
Will my database be visible with other foreign databases on the IWP home page?
No. Your DataTrium subscription includes a “custom exit URL” for IWP: When visitors exits your database using IWP, they will be redirected to an URL of your choice, making it seamless with your web site. This is a DataTrium exclusive feature.
Do you support previous versions of FileMaker Pro (version 3-4-5-6) ?
No. Previous versions of FileMaker Pro have serious hosting limitations. Instant Web Publishing is very limited and accounts & privileges are difficult to manage. If you are serious about hosting your FileMaker Pro database on the internet, we encourage you to upgrade to FileMaker Pro 7.0, 8.0, 8.5, 9.0. You will be glad you did. Top
